Enriching Co-Curriculars at SJS
An SJS education extends far beyond the classroom. Our Senior School students explore a diverse range of co-curricular activities, which foster personal growth, creativity and community engagement.
All Senior School students participate in at least two co-curriculars a year, ranging from creative opportunities like Art Factory, academic challenges such as Debate Team and athletic teams open to all.
ASCEND Clubs: Student Voice and Leadership
Students are at the helm with ASCEND clubs, where students create their own interest-based clubs. In addition to the already established, teacher-sponsored co-curriculars, students have even more opportunities to pursue their interests or discover new ones. What club will you start?
Artistic Expression
SJS offers music, visual arts and theatrical options for expression beyond the curriculum. For example, students interested in music may choose to join one of our choirs, or audition to be part of one of the school bands.
Visual arts options range from Art Factory, which offers open-ended exploration, to specialized skills such as Fibre Crafts Club.
Students with a passion for theatre can join the annual school theatrical production, filling roles both on stage and behind the scenes and culminating with a performance on a professional stage on Granville Island.
Real World Impacts
Many co-curriculars offer students the opportunity to develop or strengthen practical skills that go beyond a normal school education.
Business Club is for anyone interested in learning how to build a business, while another real-world option is to take part in stock market competitions.
Students build their leadership skills on Student Council, as well as leadership positions within co-curriculars like Editor-in-Chief for the Wings student newspaper, or by supporting fellow students in Peer Mentoring.
Co-curriculars like Model United Nations, Green Club and Helping Hearts offer a connection to real-world issues and the chance to make direct impacts on SJS and the greater community.
Exercising Brain Power
Students seeking thought-provoking pastimes may be drawn to co-curricular offerings such as Chess Club, Math team or Trivia Club.
Many of these co-curriculars take part in local and national competitions, such as the Physics team or Math team, perfect for students interested in embracing a competitive challenge.
Students looking for a fun way to spend lunchtime may consider the Games Club or Mahjong, to learn something new or just enjoy connecting with other students
Staying Active
SJS offers a variety of athletic options for students to strengthen their skills or try something new.
All students are encouraged to try a sport, whether it’s volleyball in the fall or track and field in the spring. Everyone is welcome to join a team, giving students who may otherwise not get the opportunity a chance to play.
