Discover The Adventurer Within: SJS Outdoor Education Program

The SJS Outdoor Education Program offers all students at SJS the opportunity to explore the ocean, mountains and forests of British Columbia. Through field trips, class experiments and projects, along with grade specific outdoor education adventures, our students gain a greater appreciation for their local natural environment while also developing their leadership and team building skills.

Kindergarten: Forest Fridays

Students spend one Friday of every month exploring the natural beauty of our local landscape. Pacific Spirit Park, where Forest Fridays takes place, offers a special opportunity for students to learn in an outdoor classroom and connect more meaningfully with nature.

Grade 1: Camp Jubilee

Grade 1 students spend a full day exploring all the outdoor activities of Camp Jubilee. Located a short boat ride from Deep Cove, the Jubilee Outdoor School Programs are about exposing students to nature and outdoor activities in a way that is safe, informative and exciting.

Grade 2: Cheakamus Centre

In Grade 2, our students travel just north of Squamish, BC to Brackendale, to learn from the outdoor educators at Cheakamus Centre. They experience the salmon hatchery, farm, and other great adventures along the Cheakamus River.

Grade 3: Cheakamus Centre

Building on the skills learned in Grade 2, our Grade 3 students return to Cheakamus Centre for their first overnight camp experience! Students spend time learning about the indigenous culture of the Squamish peoples through the Longhouse Program and continue to build their salmon and farm knowledge.

Grade 4: Sea to Sky Outdoor School (Camp Elphinstone)

Our Grade 4 students travel to Camp Elphinstone for a true Outdoor Education experience with Sea to Sky Outdoor School. Spending two nights and three days, students learn to be present in nature, and learn about all of the gifts nature has to offer. They paddle large canoes as a group and challenge themselves and each other in outdoor group activities.

Grade 5: Sea to Sky Outdoor School (Camp Fircom)

Our Grade 5 students build on the skills they learned in Grade 4 and travel to Camp Fircom on Gambier Island for three days and two nights of outdoor education. Students learn about the land and what inhabits it. They learn to be present in nature, paddle large canoes as a group and challenge themselves and each other in outdoor group activities.
