How to Apply

Admissions Process

SJS has two types of admissions processes, depending on the grade for which you are applying: intake grades and non-intake grades

Intake grades (JK/K/Grades 1, 4, 6, 8, 11) have known openings and follow a structured admissions process; the number of openings varies by grade. Please review the information below.

Non-intake grades (Grades 2, 3, 5, 7, 9, 10) only have openings if current students indicate they will not return. The non-intake admissions process occurs later in the year with some key differences from intake grades. Please review the information below.

See below for an overview of the application steps and key admissions dates. Further information is available in our Admissions FAQ.

SJS is pleased to offer Financial Assistance for families who demonstrate financial need. This assistance is available for any grade from Kindergarten to Grade 12. The application for Financial Assistance is separate from the application for admission. The deadline for new families to apply for Financial Assistance is January 10, 2025.

Please review the Tuition and Financial Assistance Information for further details.

Intake Grades (Grades JK, K, 1, 4, 6, 8, 11)

“Intake Grades” are grades where we know there will be a specific number of openings. The number of openings varies by grade.

Process snapshot: All applicants to an intake grade are required to attend the admissions assessment*. Shortlisted applicants will then be invited to attend an interview with a member of the admissions team.

*JK, K and Grade 1 applicants must attend the assessment in-person. A virtual option will not be available for these grades. Unfortunately, there are no exceptions. However, if shortlisted, the parent/guardian interview can be conducted virtually or in person.

The SSAT is only required for applicants to Grade 8 and above.

Please refer to our FAQ Section for further information.

Intake-Grade Application Process

Below is a general overview of the steps families can expect, depending on their application grade.  Further information is available in our Admissions FAQ.

Step 1: Complete Online Application

Step 2: Attend Admissions Assessment (all applicants)

  • Mark the admissions assessment dates in your calendar (dates vary by grade). See the table above.
  • After the application deadline, applicants will receive confirmation of their assessment date and time. Attendance is mandatory. A virtual assessment may be arranged for specific grades. An alternate date will not be available.
  • IMPORTANT for JK, K and Grade 1: There will be no virtual assessment option for JK/K/Gr 1. Applicants to these grades must attend the assessment in person. However, if shortlisted, parent interviews can be conducted virtually.

Step 3: Await Shortlist Decision

  • The Admissions Committee will review assessment results and applications.
  • Shortlisted applicants will be invited to progress to the next stage of consideration and schedule an interview with an Admissions team member.
  • Notification dates vary by grade. Refer to the Admissions Key Dates in the table above.

Step 4: Attend Admission Interview (shortlisted applicants only)

  • Shortlisted applicant families will schedule an interview with an Admissions team member. Interviews can be conducted virtually or in-person.
    • JK to Grade 5: Interviews with parents/guardians only, approximately 30 minutes.
    • Grades 6 to 11: Interviews with the applicant and the parent/guardians, approximately 45 minutes.
  • Step 4b: Provide SSAT (Grades 8 to 11 only)
    • Ensure SJS can access the applicant’s SSAT (Secondary School Admission Test) results. The SSAT can be written anytime before January 6, 2025.

Step 5: Await Admission Decision

  • The Admissions Committee will conduct a final review and communicate a first-round decision on the published Decision Date (dates vary by grade—see the table above). Additional offers may be made from the wait pool if openings arise.

Non-Intake Grades (Grades 2, 3, 5, 7, 9, 10)

Non-intake grades (Grades 2, 3, 5, 7, 9, 10) are grades where we only have openings if current students indicate they will not be returning. The non-intake admissions process occurs later in the year with some key differences from intake grades. See below.

Process Snapshot: All applications to non-intake grades are thoroughly reviewed by the Admissions Committee. Only shortlisted applicants will proceed to the next stage, which includes attending the admissions assessment. Based on the anticipated number of openings for each grade, first-round interview invitations will be extended to selected applicants.

Please refer to our FAQ Section for further information.
