Each year, Grade 10 students engage in the Youth and Philanthropy Initiative (YPI) from March to June. Working in groups, they select a prevalent social issue in the Greater Vancouver area that aligns with their passion. Students then conduct research and collaborate with a local charity dedicated to supporting those affected by the chosen social issue. Over a span of three to four months, students visit the local charity, delve into its programs and offerings, and learn how community support can enhance the charity’s ability to assist those in need.
Each group delivers a unique presentation to the entire grade, and a judging panel, and one group is designated as the winner, securing a $5,000 grant for the charity on their behalf.
The YPI provides high school students with an enriching experience that goes beyond traditional classroom learning. Actively participating in YPI equips students not only with essential research, presentation and teamwork skills, but also fosters a profound understanding of social issues within their communities. This hands-on philanthropic experience empowers students to navigate the complexities of real-world problems and encourages critical thinking in addressing the challenges faced by local charitable organizations.
As students witness the power of collective action and embrace social responsibility, they emerge from the YPI experience not just as informed advocates for change but also as empathetic citizens ready to contribute meaningfully to the well-being of their communities.
