Athletics Round Up – 27.10.23

ISAA Volleyball Tournaments

On Friday and Saturday last week our Junior Girls and Senior Girls Volleyball teams were busy playing in their annual ISAA tournaments.

The Junior team won their final game on Friday vs. Fraser Academy to advance to the semi-finals on Saturday. They lost that game to tournament host Southpointe Academy, but bounced back and won their final game to finish 3rd.

The Senior team played at Brentwood College and started the tournament off strong with three wins in Friday’s pool play. On Saturday, they won their quarter final matchup easily and then played really well in the semis to advance to the finals. The team had to settle for silver, falling to Meadowridge in two sets in the final.

On Thursday our Bantam Girls team played their ISAA tournament at Southridge School. After losing to Stratford Hall, they were able to defeat Fraser Academy twice to finish the tournament in 8th place.

Our Grade 7 Girls Team were also in action on Thursday, playing in the ISEA Playoff Tournament. The team won its first two games to advance to the finals. The girls finished 2nd as they were defeated by a very strong Vancouver Talmud Torah squad in two sets in the final.

Grade 5 and 6 ISEA Playdays

On Tuesday our Grade 6 Girls Volleyball team concluded their season playing four games at the ISEA Playday at the Harry Jerome Centre. A fun time was had by all.

On Wednesday SJS hosted the Grade 5 Girls ISEA Playday where 12 schools from around the greater Vancouver area came together for some friendly competition and spirited play. The same day, our Grade 5 boys were to play at the ISEA soccer playday but host Meadowridge School was without power and had to cancel the event. With some quick planning and interested schools, our team was able to put together an impromptu Playday at Connaught Park where Fraser Academy, West Point Grey Academy and Stratford Hall teams came and played some fun matches on the pitch.

Cross Country Vancouver Sea-to-Sky Zone Championships

On Wednesday our Grade 8-12 cross country runners competed at the VS2S Zone Meet at Jericho Beach Park. This is the first year that cross country is tiered by school population, similar to most other high school sports in BC. Congratulations to our Senior Boys team who captured the first ever ‘A’ Cross Country Zone Championship. The team of four boys will run again at the Provincial Championships on Saturday, November 4 in Surrey. Also advancing to Provincials is Mika Shadforth who was the top female runner of all ‘A’ Senior Girl runners.
