Position Purpose & Overview

SJS is looking for energetic and motivated Summer Camp Leaders to help plan and lead summer camps for our children and youth. Under direction of the Summer Camp Program Coordinator, the Summer Camp Leader will be responsible for planning activities and supervising children through a variety of programs. The successful candidates will ensure the safety and well-being of participants, and will communicate and work cooperatively with participants, parents, and other program staff.

SJS will be hiring positions for the Summer Camp Leader 1 and Summer Camp Leader 2. Both positions will have altered levels of responsibility.

Key Responsibilities

  • Participate in program leadership training sessions.
  • Facilitate and lead creative, active, and engaging weekly camp programs including a variety of activities, games, sports, and crafts, appropriate to the age and theme of the camps.
  • Supervise participants directly, maintaining appropriate leader-to-participants ratios at all times.
  • Ensure the safety and well-being of participants by maintaining the program space, implementing safe practices and leading well organized activities.
  • Work cooperatively and collaboratively with other Summer Camp Leaders.
  • Supervise and mentor volunteers.
  • Perform first aid as needed.
  • Report on the results of planned activities, including any incidents, accidents, or operational concerns.
  • Summer Camp Leader 1s will be responsible for ensuring weekly programs are planned and for purchasing supplies as needed (with reimbursements of the total cost).
  • Perform other related duties as required.

It should be understood that the activities, responsibilities and obligations of this position may be modified from time to time, through discussion between the direct supervisor and the employee, in order to effectively meet the requirements of the School. On rare occasions where there are urgent needs at the School, an employee may be assigned to temporarily backfill role(s) critical to the school’s operations and business continuity.

Reporting Structure

  • Department: Summer Camp
  • Reports to: Summer Camp Program Coordinator
  • Key Interactions:
    • Internal: Summer Camp Program Coordinator, Summer Camp Assistant Coordinators, other Summer Camp Leaders, Non-Teaching Employees, and the Payroll Administrator.
    • External: Students, Parents, and External Contractors.

Position Details

  • Full-time temporary position.
  • Work location: On site
  • 50% reimbursement of monthly Translink pass.
  • Summer Camp Leader 1s will be paid an hourly rate of $25.35.
  • Summer Camp Leader 2s will be paid an hourly rate of $23.15.

Required Qualifications and Key Skills

Education & Work Experience

  • Experience working with children and youth in a childcare, recreational, or instructional setting.
  • Working knowledge of sports, social activities, arts, crafts, and special events of particular interest to today’s youth.
  • 19 years of age or older.
  • Completion of a Secondary School program.
  • Legally allowed to work in Canada with children and the vulnerable sector.
  • An emergency First Aid and CPR-C certificate is considered an asset.

Qualities and Skills

  • Understanding of age group characteristics, traits, and the ability to adapt programs.
  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills necessary to establish a rapport with various age groups.
  • Passionate about working with kids and experience supervising children.
  • Excellent verbal communication skills.
  • Preference for safety and wellbeing.

Hours of Work

  • Mandatory in-person training days from 9:00AM to 4:00 PM
    • Sunday May 26, 2024Saturday June 1, 2024Sunday June 2, 2024
    • Saturday June 15, 2024
  • Summer Camp Program runs for four weeks from June 17th, 2024 to July 12th, 2024
    • Working hours are Monday to Friday between the hours of 7:15AM to 5:30 PM (8 hours per day).Includes paid breaks and lunch, during which leaders must remain in the program area to maintain the appropriate leader-to-participant ratio.
    • Includes prep and clean up time or supervision before and after the program hours of 9:00-3:30.

Conditions of Employment

  • The successful candidate will be required to complete child abuse prevention training and concussion training provided by St. John’s School, and provide consent for a criminal background check for vulnerable sector. The successful candidate will also be required to complete Level 1 First Aid training.
  • Clearance on criminal record check for vulnerable sector is a condition of employment
  • Ability to legally work in Canada, in an educational setting is a condition of employment
