Primary School Associate Teacher

Position Purpose & Overview

The Primary School Associate Teacher will assist with covering classes, the learning support team and other support results related to teaching and learning. The successful candidate will be directly involved in the academic programme of the Junior School and will ideally have a passion for teaching and inspiring learning in all of our students. We are looking for a candidate with excellent communication, organization, and collaboration skills, who can make a positive difference in our Junior School.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide TOC coverage from Grade K to Grade 5 in the Primary Years Programme (PYP), including specialist areas such as French, Art, Music, PE, Drama, and Library as appropriate.
  • Fill in and cover classes for teachers who are absent from School.
  • Provide personalized instruction and learning support for individual students.
  • Work with the learning support team with in-class student support and co-teaching alongside subject teachers as appropriate.
  • Establish a day-to-day connection and sense of belonging with students and colleagues.
  • Collaborate with classroom teachers supporting areas such as curriculum planning, differentiated instruction and assessment.
  • Supervise students during non-instructional time.
  • Support student learning with small group and individual instruction.
  • Collaborate with a team of dedicated professionals who embrace school values of courage, creativity, and citizenship.
  • Participate in Professional Development activities.
  • Take lead in after school co-curricular clubs (2 terms)
  • Participate in field trips, outdoor education, service projects, leadership development, and athletics.

This role will require working hours outside of school office hours: often evening events; occasionally going offsite to document student programs; and occasional morning and weekend commitments.

On rare occasions where there are urgent needs at the School, an employee may be assigned to temporarily backfill role(s) critical to the school’s operations and business continuity.

  • Reports to: Junior School Principal
  • Key Interactions:
    • Internal: Faculty, non-teaching employees, payroll administrator, School Principals, and Assistant Principals.
    • External: Parents, Alumni, and Teacher’s Regulation Branch

Position Details

  • Full-time contract position for one school year.
  • Work location: On site
  • Associate teachers are paid according to the teacher’s grid at 5PB/0 years irrespective of teaching experience.
  • Annual salary is prorated based on the length of the contract.

Required Qualifications and Key Skills

Education & Work Experience

  • A valid BC Certification of Teaching.
  • An Early Childhood Educator (ECE) certification is considered an asset.
  • Completion of a Bachelor of Education degree.
  • Need to be legally entitled to work in Canada.
  • A Basic First Aid certificate is considered an asset.

Conditions of Employment

  • The successful candidate will be required to complete child abuse prevention training, concussion training, Level 1 first-Aid training provided by St. John’s School and provide consent for a criminal background check for vulnerable sector
  • Clearance on criminal record check for vulnerable sector is a condition of employment
  • Ability to legally work in Canada, in an educational setting is a condition of employment
